Basic Recipes

This is a quick-reference guide I put together for you, since I refer to these recipes lots of times!

Aunt Linda’s Never-Fail Pie Crust

by Heather Harris Brady

Warning: This recipe is just plain weird, and may cause emotional disturbance. Just close your eyes when you add the egg and vinegar. It will be okay.

  • 3 T. butter
  • ½ c. Crisco
  • 2 c. unbleached all purpose flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 t. vinegar
  • 4 T. cold water

Add the flour to a large mixing bowl and cut in the butter.

Mix the egg, vinegar and water.

Add to the flour and stir, lifting the flour with a fork  until it is completely moistened. (It will be sticky, keep going!)

Divide in two and roll out one half on a well-floured board.

Dutch Apple Pie, Little House by the Dunes

by Heather Harris Brady

Basic 1-2-3-4 streusel recipe

Basing it on a 1/4 c. measure:

  • one part white sugar
  • two parts packed brown sugar
  • two parts chilled butter
  • three parts oatmeal
  • four parts flour (can be a mix of all-purpose and whole wheat)
  • 1 t. cinnamon and a dash of salt

(You could also add in some wheat germ, chia seeds or flax seeds.)

Measure everything into a bowl and mix it until crumbly, mixing it with your hands seems to work best.
